Hailing from South Carolina, NEEDTOBREATHE didn’t have to come far to start a grueling three month run of Tour De Compadres. Raleigh, North Carolina, kicked off night one of the tour and I would say they would be pretty happy about it.

Getting everything started, in front of an already packed amphitheater, Welshly Arms brought the blues and good ol’ rock and roll from Ohio. Just in the last year their songs have been featured in a national TV/Radio campaign for the Cleveland Indians, the promo for the Netflix series Sense8, and in the trailer for the Tarantino film Hateful Eight. Their live show was captivating and powerful, and will turn many heads across the country throughout the tour.

Following a terrific opener was North Carolina’s own, John Mark McMillan. Most known for his some “How He Loves,” McMillan found early success within the Christian Rock community despite a relatively independent status. His deep voice is soothing and his music is written with such emotion, it is hard not to love what he creates. McMillan and his band will only be performing on the first leg of the tour and will eventually be replaced by the band Parachute.

In direct support for the headliners, Mat Kearney stepped up just as the sun was setting on our capital city. The Nashville based musician has a long list of television shows that have used his music. So, chances are, his music was the soundtrack to one of your favorite tv show moments and you have no idea. Kearney walked out to thousands of screaming fans and played for a solid hour. With one final roar of the crowd as he raised his hand and thanked everyone for being there, the scene was set for what was to come.

Fresh off the release of their sixth album, Hard Love, the South Carolina band is set to bring such an amazing experience throughout the country. After coming out and strong, the band left the stage and Bear Rinehart was left alone to start a powerful song, “Difference Maker.” It was obvious that it was a fan favorite, because everyone pulled out their phones to start capturing the moment. After the short break, the band returned and went back to playing their foot stomping and dance-worthy songs.

In all honesty, this was going to be just another night on the job for me. But, at the end of the night I had to sit down and realize that this was one of the more enjoyable concerts that I have been able to cover. If NEEDTOBREATHE and the Tour De Compadres will be rolling through your town in the coming months, do yourself a favor and take the night off to enjoy some good music.
